Manual

Everything FrameLoom can do, step by step — each feature comes with a short video on the same photo. The videos have no sound; the explanation appears as captions on screen.

1 Opening an image

Click ‘Open image’ and choose a photo, clip art or other image on your own computer. FrameLoom works in Chrome and Edge and processes everything in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

  • It also works offline once the app has been opened.
  • Under ‘Default folders’ (at the top) you set a folder where opening and saving start by default.
  • You can open another image at any time with the button at the bottom of the panel.

2 Frame shape

On the ‘Shape & Placement’ tab choose a frame shape: portrait, landscape, square, circle and ellipse are free. Heart, binoculars and sunglasses are Pro shapes.

  • You stretch or shrink the ellipse, heart and binoculars with the width and height sliders.
  • For the binoculars you set how flat the lenses are and how far they overlap.
  • For the sunglasses you choose the lens colour (black, blue, brown, gold, silver, green), the transparency and the thickness of the frame.

3 Aspect ratio and rounded corners

For portrait, landscape and square you choose an aspect ratio such as 1:1, 4:3 or 16:9. With ‘Rounded corners’ and the ‘Corner radius’ slider you make the corners as round as you like.

  • Handy for app icons or social-media sizes, for example.

4 Fixed pixel size and preferred frames

Want several images to be exactly the same size, for example 1024 × 800 pixels? Tick ‘Use a fixed pixel size’ and enter width and height. The image fills the frame exactly; it is cropped where needed.

  • With ‘+ Add’ you save the size as a preferred frame (up to 10); one click brings the size back.
  • Give a preferred frame a label, for example ‘website’: the label appears when you hover over it.
  • ‘Manage’ lets you remove preferred frames again.

5 Move, scale and rotate

Drag the image inside the frame to choose which part is visible. Scrolling on the image or the ‘Scale’ slider zooms in and out; ‘Centre image’ puts everything back in the middle.

  • ‘Rotate’ turns the image clockwise or anticlockwise, handy for straightening a tilted horizon.
  • ‘Straighten (0°)’ resets the angle.

6 Border and drop shadow

On the ‘Border & Shadow’ tab you choose the thickness and colour of the border and add a soft drop shadow with adjustable blur and offset.

  • Border and shadow follow the chosen frame shape.

7 Icon border Pro

A border of small icons around the frame: fire engines, cars, hearts, swans or a bridal bouquet. Choose one or more icons and set the number, size and distance.

  • A negative distance lets the icons overlap the photo, a positive one leaves space around it.
  • With a rectangular frame you rotate the icons 90° per side; with several icons you set the rotation per kind.
  • The icon border does not work with the sunglasses.

8 Spare space: colour or transparent

Space in the frame that the image doesn’t fill can be filled with a colour — or made transparent. Transparency is kept in PNG and ICO; JPG automatically gets a white background.

  • Note: if the spare space is set to ‘Fill with colour’, a part you made transparent with the magic wand, freehand selection, eraser or a hole is also filled with that colour. As soon as you choose one of those tools, FrameLoom therefore sets the spare space to transparent automatically.

9 Magic wand Pro

Click a colour in the photo to make it (and similar colours around it) transparent. The ‘Tolerance’ slider sets how closely colours must match.

  • ‘Contiguous’ only removes the area where you click; ‘Everywhere’ removes that colour throughout the photo.
  • You can click several times, and undo every step.

10 Freehand selection Pro

Click points around the subject you want to keep and close the outline at the golden start point. Everything outside the outline becomes transparent.

  • Drag a point to adjust the outline.
  • ‘Invert’ removes the inside of the outline instead.

11 Eraser Pro

Brush over the parts you want gone. The slider makes the eraser larger or smaller for fine work, for example around hair or branches.

  • The circle under your mouse shows how big the eraser is.

12 Hole Pro

Make a round or square hole in the photo. Click in the photo to place it, drag it to move it and use the golden handle (or the slider) for its size. The hole is visible straight away and stays adjustable until you click ‘Apply hole’.

  • Choose whether the hole becomes transparent or gets a colour; you can switch as often as you like.
  • You can make as many holes as you like. ‘Undo last step’ removes the last hole.
  • You can put a text in a hole, or let an image show through (see below).

13 Images behind the photo Pro

Add up to six images that go behind the photo. An image you don’t link to a hole shows through everywhere the photo is transparent: in a hole, or on a background you removed with the magic wand or freehand selection.

  • Want an image in one specific hole? Choose it at that hole under ‘Image in this hole’: it then appears only there, fitted to the hole. That way every hole gets its own image.
  • ‘Size’ and ‘Move’ decide which part of the image you see. First choose in the list which image you are adjusting.
  • Rotating an image isn’t possible; if needed, rotate the main photo first and then place the image in the hole.

14 Text Pro

Type a text and choose the font (bold, round, ornate, handwriting or block letters), the colour, the height, the width and the line thickness. Drag the text on the image to move it.

  • With ‘+ Add text’ you place up to eight texts; each text has its own settings. Click a text in the list or in the image to edit it.
  • You can rotate each text and optionally set it vertically (the letters stacked).
  • ‘Show photo only within the text’ shows the photo only inside the letters of the texts with that choice.
  • A text may happily sit half inside and half outside a hole.

★ Combining

Everything in FrameLoom combines; the tools build on each other. A few examples:

A hole with an image in it, a text sitting half inside and half outside the hole, and a border with a shadow around it all.
  • New background: remove the background with the magic wand or freehand selection, then add an image: it shows through where you removed it.
  • Photo-in-hole with text: make a hole, link an image to it, and put a text in or across it.
  • Several holes, several images: each hole its own image and, if you like, its own text.
  • Photo letters: ‘Show photo only within the text’ combined with an image behind the photo gives letters of your photo on a different background.
  • Sticker or logo: freehand selection or a hole, plus a border and drop shadow, saved as PNG with a transparent background.
  • Fixed size: combine a fixed pixel size with a preferred frame, so a whole series of images ends up exactly the same size.

Handy tips

  • Every step under Make transparent can be undone; ‘Restore all transparency’ resets everything.
  • Want to keep transparency? Export as PNG (or ICO). JPG has no transparency.
  • The order is free: feel free to go back to another tab while you work.

Exporting, SVG and licence

Below the preview you choose the export format: PNG, JPG or ICO (for desktop icons). The size shown under the preview is the size of the file. Under ‘Default folders’ you set where files are saved by default.

Edit SVG (Pro): open an SVG file, choose a frame, click parts away or make a freehand selection, and save the result as a genuine, scalable SVG again. Nothing is ever converted to pixels.

Licence: without a licence an export gets a watermark. With a Basic or Pro licence it does not. Use the ‘Activate licence’ button to enter your key; a licence works on up to 3 devices. You can upgrade Basic to Pro later.

You can always try it for free (with a watermark).
